Wiring is out of sight, so it is easy to forget it has a working life. Homes wired more than thirty years ago were not designed for today’s kitchens, home offices and electric cars.
The warning signs
- Breakers or fuses that trip often
- Lights that flicker or dim when appliances start
- Outlets or switches that feel warm
- A burning smell with no obvious cause
- Two-prong outlets with no earth
- Rubber or fabric-covered cables in the loft
One of these on its own is a reason to get a check. Several together usually mean the wiring is past its best.
What a survey involves
An electrician tests every circuit, checks the panel and earthing, and gives you a written report. If a rewire is needed, you get one fixed price and a plan that keeps most of your home powered while the work is done.
| Age of wiring | What we recommend |
|---|---|
| Under 15 years | Test every 10 years |
| 15–30 years | Test every 5 years |
| Over 30 years | Survey now and plan for a rewire |
