After a storm: a five-minute roof checklist

Storm damage is easiest and cheapest to fix in the first few days, before rain finds its way in. You do not need a ladder for this check.

From the garden

  • Missing, lifted or cracked shingles
  • Shingle granules collecting at the bottom of downspouts
  • Bent or loose flashing around the chimney
  • Gutters pulled away from the fascia

From inside

Check the loft with a torch for daylight through the boards, damp patches or wet insulation. Upstairs, look for new stains on ceilings near outside walls.

Never climb onto a wet roof after a storm. Take photos from the ground — they help with insurance and help us quote quickly.
